Dew claw removal in dogs
Dew claw removal in dogs
The RCVS have indicated that, while removal of dew claws is not appropriate where done for the convenience of the owner, there may be cases where the dew claws protrude and are likely to be torn and damaged by normal activity. This makes their removal justifiable, and even advisable.
The National Assembly for Wales does not consider removing dew claws for purely cosmetic reasons, such as complying with a breed standard, justifiable. However, it does not consider it possible to stipulate – and effectively enforce - exactly the circumstances in which this procedure should be performed.
The REGULATIONS will therefore leave this decision to the discretion of those performing the procedure. The requirement in Regulation 6(c) would prevent it being performed for cosmetic purposes, as this would not be in accordance with good practice.
All docking operations are undertaken during evening surgery. You should telephone for an appointment AS SOON AS THE LITTER IS WHELPED in order that arrangements can be made to dock before they are too old.
Make sure that you have your letter of authority, shotgun certificate etc available and, in the case of a shotgun/firearm certificate, make sure that YOU BRING A PHOTOCOPY FOR OUR RECORDS. No paperwork means no docking! Please remember that our veterinary surgeon must act both within the law and within RCVS guidance. He will not risk his livelihood to help you out if you cannot provide the evidence required.
A copy of your SGC/FAC and/or the original letter of authority will be kept with our copy of your working dog certificate.
We can accommodate dam and litter in licensed overnight isolation kennels for those travelling long distances. We also have good contacts for local bed and breakfast.
It will be necessary for you to return with the litter before they are 3 months old. Alternatively, you may be able to arrange for your own vet to do the microchipping.
